Drilling bentonite: role, uses and selection criteria

Bentonite is selected for its ability to hydrate, develop viscosity and support stable drilling-fluid performance under defined field conditions.

What bentonite contributes

In a properly designed fluid, bentonite helps suspend and transport cuttings, supports borehole stability and contributes to fluid-loss control. Actual performance depends on water quality, dosage, mixing energy, hydration time and the ground formation.

Main applications

  • Water-well drilling and mineral exploration.
  • Horizontal directional drilling.
  • Diaphragm walls, piles and slurry-supported excavation.
  • Selected civil-engineering sealing applications.

Information to define before buying

State the application, expected quantity, preferred packaging, destination and Incoterm. Technical targets may include viscosity, swelling, moisture, pH, filtration, yield and residue. Values should always be linked to a stated test method.

Practical approachRun comparative trials with the same water, concentration, mixing procedure and hydration time before approving a commercial batch.

Available product forms

Depending on the project, the request may concern activated drilling-grade powder, raw non-activated powder or raw bentonite lumps. The supplier should confirm the appropriate form and provide representative technical information.
